Bret, the first hurricane of the 1999 Atlantic hurricane season, took aim on southern Texas in August. Bret also became the season’s first major hurricane with top winds of 140 mph.
The storm came ashore in the sparsely populated Kennedy County of Texas and deposited 25 inches of rain in some coastal locations.
