THE EYE OF HURRICANE LINDA
The eye (the dark central hole, below) is a place of peace compared with the rest of the hurricane. The Hercules research aircraft pilots who cross the wild storms of the outer hurricane, to enter the eye, report a magical place. A clear, calm, vertical tunnel with blue sky above and a complete circuit of massive thunderstorms. The eye is typically twenty to forty miles across. Here is an actual quote from a pilots report:

"As your eyes adjust to the glare of sunlight, you gaze out at one of the most awesome scenes in nature: the "stadium effect" inside the eye. A solid wall of clouds circles around the Hercules, as though you are floating in a giant football stadium made of clouds. You are inside a giant well that opens up miles above your head into a bright, blue sky."
