Edouard grew into a hurricane, with 145 mph winds, on Aug. 24 1996. Edouard did not produce any serious damage, although 40,000 customers were without power after the storm passed over the New England states of the USA.
However Edouard has one claim to fame: a hurricane is classified as "major" if its winds exceed 110 mph. Hurricane Edouard maintained its status as a major hurricane for seven days, a feat rarely attained by hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean.
