SPIRAL GALAXIES LOCKED IN ORBIT

Spiral Galaxies locked in orbit 600x480 33K
The galaxy on the left is NGC 2207 and on the right IC 2163 but for ease of discussion I am going to call them Left and Right. Strong gravitational forces from Left have distorted the shape of Right, flinging out stars a hundred thousand light years towards the right hand edge of this Hubble image.

Right does not have sufficient energy to escape from Left and is destined to be pulled back and swing around Left in the future. Trapped in their orbits around each other, these galaxies will continue to distort and disrupt each other. Eventually, billions of years from now, they will merge into a single massive galaxy.
