A BARRED SPIRAL GALAXY in plan view (NGC 1365)

Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 1365 550x449 23K

Galaxies occur in a variety of shapes but the most eye-catching are the spirals, especially barred spirals. The obvious bar across the centre of the galaxy (the bar is vertical in this photo) is surrounded by cooler stars that appear yellow on colour photographs.

The bar has distinct dust lanes and terminates abruptly in slender curved arms that are lit by "recently" formed blue stars.
